Opportunity

In order to better understand procedural animation and coding, we produced some video games internally. Our artists used Java and Processing (a java library and IDE) to create the video game "Cong Ming Xing Xing."

Solution

"Cong Ming Xing Xing" pushed our artists knowledge on object oriented programing as well as the proper formatting/packaging of assets.

On top of increased technical skills, our artists also improved their design research skills. We did a deep dive into pixel art, which allowed us to really get a handle on the workflow and best practices. With this new perspective we made detailed and stunning sprites while maintaining that pixelated feel.

We also did a lot of research on African art. Gorillas are indigenous to Africa, more specifically Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, so African patterns and art styles were used for a sense of place-making.

This game was made while we were working with Chinese clients, so we also used this opportunity to really advance our type skills. We made a pixelated typeface that worked with both English Characters and Chinese Hanzi.

Our artists continue to use these technical and creative skills in our current projects.
